Definition: coarse- or medium-grained intrusive igneous rock that is rich in quartz and feldspar, with minor amounts of mica, amphiboles, and other minerals; it is the most common plutonic rock of the Earth's crust, forming by the cooling of magma at depth.

Fun fact about granite:  Mount Airy (here in NC) is the world’s largest open-faced granite quarry.  On the surface alone, the quarry encompasses about 60 acres.  The mother mass — the block you can’t see — is about 7 miles long and 1 mile wide, north and south. And it’s 8,000 feet deep.
